Service, leadership, and community have been guiding principles throughout Sammy Jermane’s life. From serving his country as a United States Marine to mentoring young athletes today, Sammy continues to make a lasting impact both on and off the field.

Answering the Call to Serve

Like many Americans, Sammy was deeply impacted by the attacks on September 11, 2001. Motivated by a desire to serve his country and make a difference, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and departed for boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, in June 2002.

After graduating boot camp, Sammy attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) before completing his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.

Following MOS school, he was assigned to 5th Battalion, 10th Marines, Romeo Battery at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During his four years of active duty service, Sammy deployed to Iraq during the “Shock and Awe” phase of the Iraq War beginning in March 2003. He also spent a year stationed in Okinawa, Japan, before receiving an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 2006.

Throughout his military career, Sammy earned numerous awards and recognitions, including:

  • Combat Action Ribbon
  • Iraq Campaign Medal
  • Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal
  • Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal
  • Good Conduct Medal
  • Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2)
  • National Defense Service Ribbon

Building a New Mission After Military Service

After transitioning from the military, Sammy continued to pursue excellence and leadership in civilian life. He earned his Associate’s Degree in Business from Wake Technical Community College before joining the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Sports Turf Manager.

In this role, Sammy oversaw Dorrance Field, home to the UNC men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams. The position provided a meaningful transition from military life, allowing him to remain in a team-focused environment while combining his passion for sports, leadership, and mentorship.

Giving Back Through Youth Sports

Today, Sammy continues to make an impact in his community by coaching his daughters’ 4U soccer teams. Through youth sports, he helps create a positive and encouraging environment for young athletes and their families while serving as a mentor and role model both on and off the field.

His dedication to leadership, teamwork, and community service continues long after his time in uniform.

Thank You for Your Service

Sammy’s story is a powerful reminder that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. From serving overseas to investing in the next generation, he continues to embody the values of commitment, resilience, and community.
