In June 1990, Patrick McClanahan enlisted in the Navy, choosing a military career over college. Starting as a machinist, he quickly advanced to become a nuclear welder. During his 8-year service, Patrick spent significant time in Guam and two years aboard the USS Proteus—a unique Navy vessel modified to refit nuclear submarines. Over his career, he earned numerous ribbons and medals, including the Humanitarian Ribbon for his response to the eruption of Mount Pinatubo and the ESWS Pin, recognizing his expertise in surface ships and warfare. Unfortunately, Patrick’s military career was cut short after suffering severe injuries while on duty. Despite this setback, he remains deeply grateful for his experiences and the opportunity to serve his country.

Transition to Civilian Life

After leaving the military, Patrick dedicated approximately 2 years to rehabilitation, undergoing multiple surgeries and relearning how to perform everyday tasks, including walking. Upon completing his recovery, he began a new chapter at Konecranes, where he held the role of OSHA inspector. In this position, he was responsible for inspecting cranes to ensure they were safe for use. After several years in the civilian workforce, Patrick chose to retire and focus on his true passion—helping others through mechanical work.

Current Work and Community Involvement

Today, Patrick is a trusted mechanic in his community, particularly with motorcycles—a lifelong passion. Recently, he completed a complete restoration of a motorcycle for a close friend. The restoration took roughly a year, and he eagerly awaits the moment to present it. In addition to his mechanical work, Patrick is an active member of the veteran community, providing support to fellow veterans in need. He also participates in the local Scottish Rite, continuing his commitment to community service through meaningful support programs.

Justin Weikle from our Lewisburg, WV office was honored to present Patrick with his award.
