From serving as an Air Force firefighter to leading Orange County law enforcement for more than three decades, Mark Amos has dedicated his life to protecting and serving others.

Military Service: A Strong Foundation

In 1982, Mark Amos joined the United States Air Force. He served as a Fire Fighter Specialist and earned the rank of Senior Airman (SrA). For four years, he worked to protect fellow airmen, developing the leadership, discipline, and quick decision-making skills that would guide his future career.

Law Enforcement Career: Leading with Innovation

After his military service, Amos returned home and joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. His dedication and leadership quickly stood out. In August 2007, the Circuit Court Judge appointed him Sheriff after the previous sheriff retired.

Amos went on to win four consecutive elections, carrying every district in each race. As Sheriff, he brought innovation, improved public safety, and supported both his deputies and the community.

Career Highlights:

  • Maintained some of the lowest crime rates in the region
  • Introduced body-worn cameras for all field units—the first in Central Virginia to do so without a trial period
  • Equipped deputies with Narcan to combat the opioid crisis
  • Upgraded in-car and interview room video systems for transparency and accountability
  • Provided all field units with patrol rifles, red dot sights, Tasers, and advanced protective gear
  • Led development of a 700 MHz radio system with 95% countywide coverage for first responders
  • Increased deputy pay and benefits while enhancing training standards, including twice-yearly firearm qualifications
  • Added School Resource Officers to every Orange County school
  • Oversaw construction of a new Public Safety Building
  • Upgraded patrol vehicles and technology to save taxpayer dollars and improve efficiency

Service Beyond the Badge

Amos’s service extends far beyond his official duties. He is a Lifetime Member of the Orange County Fire Company, a member of the American Legion Post 156, and a volunteer with the Orange County Children’s Toy Box. He has also coached youth sports, mentoring young athletes over the years.

His leadership reached the state level as well. He served as President of the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute and Chairman of the Blue Ridge Narcotics and Gang Task Force, influencing public safety efforts across Virginia.

Greg and Crystal Dudley from our Orange, VA office were honored to present Mark with his award.
