Walter Bowers, a dedicated serviceman and proud WWII veteran, was born and raised on a farm in Orange County, Virginia, on Mountain Tract Road. He spent his childhood working alongside his father using horse and wagon, learning the importance of hard work and perseverance. Walter grew up in a loving, close-knit family, with his mother and brother Earl playing key roles in shaping his values.
At 18, Walter Bowers enlisted in the U.S. Army, completing basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. In May 1944, he was deployed to Italy, where he served as a front-line combat soldier. As a communications soldier, Walter carried a heavy unit with a long antenna, placing him in the middle of some of the most intense battles of WWII.
One of the most significant moments in Walter’s service came during the battle of Livergnano, known as “Liver and Onions.” During this battle, Walter witnessed the wounding of future U.S. Senator Bob Dole. The bravery displayed by the soldiers during this battle led to the establishment of a monument in Livergnano. This monument honors the fallen soldiers of the 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, and their campaigns in Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley.
Walter Bowers’ legacy continues to inspire those who hear his story. His birthday, June 6—D-Day—reminds us of the bravery he showed during his service. Today, Walter’s story serves as a lasting example of courage, honor, and dedication.
Walter Bowers’ remarkable life demonstrates the enduring power of service and sacrifice. His story stands as a tribute to the values that define true heroes, inspiring future generations to embrace hard work and selflessness.
