Stephen Newman

Veteran Stephen Newman joined the United States Marine Corps in December of 2008 and started bootcamp in January 2009. Stephen watched the Twin Towers collapse in middle school—that feeling never left his mind and truly didn’t sit right with him even years later. That feeling is what led Stephen to join the Marines. He says he saw it as a chance to do something honorable in a time of war. Stephen’s highest ranking was Sergeant, and he was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal and Corporal while serving his two tours in Afghanistan with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. Before being honorably discharged, Stephen was awarded Navy and Marine achievement medals for his actions in Afghanistan during combat.

After being honorably discharged from the Marines, Stephen began his career at DuPont, an American chemical company, where he’s still employed. He first started his career as an operator, but quickly transitioned into a mechanic—the role he still holds. Although it’s challenging to equate his “everyday mechanic duties” to warfare, Stephen has managed to draw upon certain elements from his military career that he concentrates on daily—discipline to get things done in a timely manner and the ability to work through stressful times in order to complete difficult tasks.

Stephen also spends his time dedicating himself to various veteran organizations including Fallen Outdoors and Wounded Warrior Project. These organizations provide crucial support and opportunities for veterans to connect with others who have shared similar experiences and challenges. Additionally, they serve as avenues for healing, camaraderie, and personal growth. Stephen is also in the process of becoming a member of the American Legion post 354.
