Veteran Russell Thompson joined the Navy Reserves on March 27, 2003, as an E3 Utilityman in the Seabees, driven by a lifelong ambition to serve in the military. Although he joined later in life, his commitment and skill quickly shone through. After boot camp, he was promoted to E4 and soon found himself in Iraq on March 5, 2005. While in Iraq, Russell was promoted to E5 and served alongside the Marines, earning a Letter of Commendation from the Marines, the Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist qualification, and the Iraq Campaign Medal. His valor and dedication were further recognized with the Global War on Terrorism Medal.

Upon returning home, Russell continued to excel, attending Career Counselor School and Journeyman Instructor School as collateral duties. In 2009, he was scheduled to return to Iraq, but stayed back to support his wife during pregnancy complications. His service continued in Afghanistan in 2012, where he earned the Army Achievement Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War Expeditionary Medal, and an ISFA NATO Medal. After 16 years of dedicated service, he medically retired as an E5. Despite the challenges, including raising seven children, one of whom is now following in his footsteps in the Navy, Russell’s legacy of service endures.

During his service, Russell also earned:

  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Meritorious Service Medal
  • Presidential Unit Citation
  • Meritorious Unit Citation

Before joining the Navy, Russell had a career in HVAC. After retiring from the military, he resumed his work in HVAC, leveraging the skills he honed as a Seabee. His expertise in HVAC was a cornerstone of his role while deployed, and it continues to be a vital part of his professional life.

Today, Russell is a pillar of his community, active in numerous organizations and always ready to lend a helping hand. He is a dedicated member of Northview Church, led by Pastor Mike Faulkner, and is also involved with BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association International). In Smyrna, he is active with PIBM, Creciendo Juntos en Cristo, where Jorge Rodriguez leads the congregation. Russell offers discounted HVAC services to these entities, demonstrating his commitment to supporting them in any way possible.

His love for his children is unwavering, and he remains actively involved in their lives, ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed. Russell’s dedication to his family and community showcases the same values of service and commitment that defined his military career.
