Honorable Military Service

Phillip Read’s commitment to service began at the young age of 17. Witnessing the 9/11 attacks at 16 deeply affected him, fueling his desire to protect his country. Raised in a military family, Phillip followed in the footsteps of his ancestors by joining the Army National Guard. From 2004 to 2005, Phillip served as a 240 Bravo Machine Gunner during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. During this deployment, he lost two fellow comrades, whom he honors as true heroes. Later, from 2007 to 2008, Phillip served as an Infantryman Team Leader in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His exemplary service earned him prestigious awards, including The Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Army Achievement Medal, among others.

Transition to Police Service

After his military service, Phillip continued his mission of helping others by joining the Harrisonburg Police Department in 2009. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving in roles such as Patrol Lieutenant and SWAT Commander. Phillip’s dedication to protecting his community led him to various duties, including patrol, special operations, investigations, and SWAT. His tireless service and leadership have earned him several accolades, including the Harrisonburg Police Department Medal of Valor and the 2019 Supervisor of the Year Award.

Chief of Police: Leading with Courage

In 2021, Phillip took on the role of Chief of Police for the Bridgewater Police Department. Shortly after, tragedy struck when an active shooter claimed the lives of two officers. Phillip continues to honor their sacrifice and remains committed to serving his community with courage and faith. His resilience and leadership are a beacon of strength for the department and the community he protects.

Commitment to Family and Faith

Beyond his professional roles, Phillip is a loving husband and father of four. He is actively involved in his local faith community, serving at Faith Community Church and as a member of the Bridgewater VFW Post #8644. Along with his wife and friends, he co-founded Hope Ridge, a non-profit dedicated to providing a refuge for those seeking God’s peace.
