At ALCOVA Mortgage, we are proud to highlight the remarkable individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving others. This month, we recognize Mike Ratkowski, a U.S. Army Veteran whose service, leadership, and continued impact in his community make him a true Hometown Hero.
Mike Ratkowski began his military career in 1996, joining the U.S. Army with a desire to push himself, serve his country, and become part of something bigger than himself. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, where he served as an Airborne Infantry Soldier, mastering some of the Army’s most demanding and elite training.
After years of service in the airborne community, Mike continued to grow as a leader. He later served at Fort McCoy as a Drill Sergeant, training, mentoring, and shaping the next generation of soldiers. His dedication and leadership earned him the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC) by the time he completed his military career in 2004.
Through every assignment, Mike embodied discipline, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—qualities that have stayed with him long after leaving the Army.
Transitioning out of uniform, Mike explored several different career paths before discovering that he was, at heart, an entrepreneur. His ability to problem-solve, work hard, and lead with confidence helped him build a series of successful ventures. Over the years, Mike launched multiple businesses, including:
Each new chapter allowed him to connect with people, support local homeowners, and continue serving his community in meaningful ways. His entrepreneurial journey reflects the same drive and determination that defined his military service.

In addition, Mike played a direct role in supporting the Sentinel Foundation’s hurricane relief efforts in the North Carolina mountains. He helped transport supplies to impacted areas and assisted with on-the-ground recovery efforts, demonstrating once again his readiness to step in when his community needs him most.
From his years as an Airborne Infantry Soldier and Drill Sergeant to his ongoing work as a business owner and community volunteer, Mike Ratkowski continues to lead with integrity, generosity, and heart. His dedication to serving both his country and community is what makes him a shining example of a Hometown Hero.
