At ALCOVA Mortgage, we’re proud to recognize the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving others. This month, we honor Michael Freix, a retired U.S. Navy Commander whose lifetime of service, both in uniform and in his community, makes him a true Hometown Hero.
Michael Freix began his military journey in July 1976 when he received a nomination to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Four years later, he graduated and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Choosing the path of Naval Aviation, Michael earned his wings and was assigned to the VP-5 “Mad Foxes” Squadron, flying the P-3C Orion aircraft.
During his time with the squadron, Michael completed three deployments to Sigonella, Sicily, supporting vital missions overseas. He later joined the Naval Recruiting Command, where he helped select Naval Aviation candidates entering through the college program—mentoring and shaping the next generation of aviators.
After his active-duty service, Michael spent seven years in the Naval Reserve, flying out of Andrews Air Force Base. He retired with the rank of Commander (O-5) after a combined 15 years of service to his country.
When Michael transitioned out of the Navy, his dedication to serving the nation didn’t stop. He began a new career with Lockheed Martin, one of America’s leading defense contractors, where he spent 30 years supporting multiple classified programs in the Washington, D.C. area.
Michael retired from Lockheed Martin in June 2018, closing a remarkable 45-year chapter of national service—first in the military and then in the defense industry. His motivation has always been simple: a deep love for his country and a desire to give back in meaningful ways.
After retirement, Michael turned his focus to helping those in need within his community. He founded two nonprofit organizations in Northern Virginia (NOVA)—one serving the homeless population and another called Lazarus MotorWorks.
Through Lazarus MotorWorks, Michael and his dedicated team provide free vehicles to individuals and families who otherwise couldn’t afford one. These cars help people get to work, school, and medical appointments—empowering them to rebuild stability in their lives. In just two and a half years, the organization has donated 39 cars to families across Northern Virginia.
In addition to his nonprofit work, Michael is an active member of several men’s groups at New Life Christian Church, where he continues to mentor others and strengthen his community through faith-based outreach.
From flying missions around the world to changing lives at home, Michael Freix embodies the spirit of a true Hometown Hero. His leadership, compassion, and lifelong commitment to service continue to make a powerful difference both in his community and beyond.
Graham Pruitt from our Chantilly, VA branch was proud to present Michael with his award.
