In 1964, Petty Officer Merle M. Pierce began his dedicated service by joining the United States Navy as a Construction Battalion engineer, commonly known as a “SeaBee.” These courageous engineers build critical infrastructure in challenging and dangerous conditions. Merle embraced this demanding role, contributing to the safety and success of his fellow service members.
After completing his training, Merle served in Florida, honing the skills he would later use on the battlefield. In 1965, he deployed to Vietnam, where he worked tirelessly for three years. His efforts as a “SeaBee” demonstrated both his skill and his unwavering courage.
On his final day in Vietnam, Petty Officer Pierce suffered severe injuries from an artillery attack. The blast caused head trauma, shrapnel wounds, and the loss of sight in one eye and hearing in one ear. After being evacuated, he woke up weeks later in a military hospital in Germany. A compassionate nurse provided care during his recovery, and she later became his wife of nearly 50 years.
Merle’s resilience during this time was remarkable. Despite the hardships, he recovered and continued to live with a spirit of strength and determination.
After his military service, Merle transitioned to civilian life and became an electric company lineman in Virginia. For decades, he worked to bring power to homes and businesses, often braving harsh weather to restore electricity during outages. His dedication to his community mirrored the commitment he showed in the Navy.
Whether on the battlefield or in the neighborhoods of Virginia, Merle’s focus was always on helping others. His work left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Petty Officer Merle M. Pierce’s life is an inspiring story of service, sacrifice, and resilience. His dedication in the Navy as a “SeaBee,” his courage in Vietnam, and his unwavering community service in Virginia deserve recognition.
