Kenneth Wayne Dunbar proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1990. He enlisted in February 1984 and quickly advanced to the rank of E-4 Specialist. Throughout his service, Ken trained as a cook, completing 10 weeks of Basic Training and 8 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. His dedication earned him the Meritorious Service Ribbon and the Army Achievement Award.
After six years of honorable service, Kenneth Wayne Dunbar received an honorable discharge in 1990. Although he did not see combat, his commitment to his country remained unwavering. His exceptional work ethic and steadfast dedication left a profound impact on his family, community, and the nation. In fact, Ken’s legacy continues to inspire all who knew him.
On December 17, 2014, Ken passed away unexpectedly. His nephew, Wally Andrus, a Loan Officer at ALCOVA Mortgage in Blacksburg, VA, fondly remembers the lasting influence his uncle had on his life. Wally shared, “My Uncle Ken was a great man. He loved our family, and we are less of a unit without him here.” In tribute to Kenneth Wayne Dunbar, Wally presented the Hometown Hero plaque to his aunt, honoring Ken’s enduring legacy.
Beyond his military service, Ken had a deep love for his family and NASCAR. He devoted himself to his wife, Anna, and their daughters. These passions helped shape his character and strengthened his resolve. As Wally Andrus reflected, “There are certain people in life you don’t realize made such an impact on you until they’re gone. Ken was a hero in my life, and his memory will always be cherished.”
Today, Ken’s memory continues to live on through his family’s love and respect. His legacy of service, family devotion, and kindness still inspires everyone who knew him. His life serves as a powerful reminder of the remarkable impact one individual can have on others.
