Frederick Pryor is widely admired in Roanoke for his resourcefulness and generosity. Often compared to MacGyver for his skills and to Mother Teresa for his compassion, Fred’s story begins in 1977 when he enlisted in the Marines. He served for eleven years as a Combat Engineer, gaining expertise in demolition, landmine warfare, heavy equipment, bridge construction, and carpentry. Fred’s unit was known for its ability to build or destroy, depending on the mission.

Serving with the Marines

Fred’s military career included many opportunities for growth. He attended survey school, cold weather school, and non-commissioned officer school. By 1986, he reclassified as a 67T Tactical Transport Helicopter Repairman. Fred eventually became a Platoon Sergeant, ensuring the well-being of his squad and fulfilling his duties with pride. He also played a key role in administration and helped establish the Toys for Tots program.

A Dedication to Community Service

Frederick’s service extended beyond his military years. Today, he serves as the Director of Center Services at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke. He was instrumental in converting the old Jefferson High School into a thriving arts and community center. The facility now hosts concerts, weddings, and fundraisers while also providing space for non-profits and small businesses. Fred is known as the “ambassador” of the Jefferson Center, ensuring that every event runs smoothly.

Volunteerism and Local Impact

Fred’s dedication to Roanoke doesn’t stop at work. He actively serves on the boards of Community High School and the June Bug Center in Floyd, VA. He helped Girls Rock Roanoke secure essential equipment for their first year. Fred also continues to support Toys for Tots by overseeing donation boxes at holiday events at the Jefferson Center.

A Friend to All

Frederick’s generosity and willingness to help are well-known. Whether it’s repairing a flooded basement or cutting down trees, he’s always ready to lend a hand. Local Chef John Schopp describes Fred as “one of the kindest, most genuine humans I know.” Music writer Tad Dicken also praises him, calling him an “all-around good person who improves things with his spirit and presence.”

Frederick Pryor’s commitment to service—both in the military and his community—earned him multiple nominations for the Hometown Heroes award from ALCOVA Mortgage. His military background, personal kindness, and tireless community involvement make him a beloved member of Roanoke.
