Fred Owens

A Distinguished Military Career

Fred Owens, a US Army veteran, served for nearly a decade as a Combat Engineer in the 10th Special Forces Group. His military career spanned from 1975 to 1984. During this time, he was stationed at Fort Devens, MA, and served at various international locations before concluding his service at Fort Benning, GA. As a Combat Engineer, Fred took on critical roles such as constructing bridges, clearing obstacles, and detecting and neutralizing mines. Additionally, he built defensive positions to help secure soldiers in combat.

Transition to Civilian Life and Business Ownership

After his military service, Fred transitioned into union ironwork, playing a key role in constructing the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in Green Bank, WV. The GBT, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope, stands at 485 feet and boasts a 100-meter diameter. Later, Fred became the proud owner of Ray E. Owens and Sons Moving, a family-owned business that remains veteran-friendly. His business success continues his commitment to serving his community.

Dedication to Supporting Veterans

Fred’s commitment to serving others didn’t stop with his business. He is deeply involved with New Freedom Farm, a nonprofit organization in Buchanan, VA, that provides support to veterans and first responders facing PTSD, substance abuse, traumatic brain injuries, and other challenges. New Freedom Farm uses equine therapy and peer-to-peer support to help these individuals. As a member of the New Freedom Farm Color Guard, Fred works to raise awareness and advocate for veterans’ needs.

Ongoing Volunteer Work and Hobbies

Fred also dedicates his time to the Barnyard Buddies program, which helps stray kittens and cats find care and shelter. Furthermore, he enjoys flat track bike racing and fishing, balancing his community work with personal interests.

Recently, Fred Owens received recognition as a Hometown Hero. Branch Partner Jonathan Sweat from The Legacy Team in Roanoke, VA, presented him with the award, celebrating his service, business achievements, and ongoing dedication to his community.
