Service has been a defining theme throughout Christopher Cutlip’s life. From his 12 years in the United States Marine Corps to his current role as a School Resource Officer, Christopher has consistently dedicated himself to protecting, supporting, and serving others. His military service, community involvement, and continued commitment to helping those around him make him a true Hometown Hero.

Answering the Call to Serve

Christopher joined the United States Marine Corps in July 2000 while preparing for his senior year of high school. Inspired by multiple family members who served in the military during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War, he grew up with a strong sense of duty and a desire to give back to his country.

After spending nearly a year in the Delayed Entry Program, Christopher graduated high school in May 2001 and departed for boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island just two weeks later. Following the events of September 11, 2001, he graduated from boot camp and completed Marine Combat Training before beginning his military career as a Microwave Communications Operator.

His first assignment took him overseas to Okinawa, Japan, with the 7th Communication Battalion. After returning stateside in 2003, he served with Marine Air Wing Communications Squadron 28 at Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Deployments and Military Service

In 2004, Christopher deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II, serving for six months at Al Taqaddum Air Base. After completing his initial enlistment, he briefly transitioned to civilian life before realizing his desire to continue serving.

In 2006, Christopher reenlisted in the Marine Corps and retrained as a Data Network Specialist. Stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, he was attached to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and deployed aboard the USS Tarawa in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His military career also included a three-year tour as a Marine Corps Recruiter assigned to Recruiting Station Richmond and Recruiting Sub-Station Lynchburg, where he helped mentor and guide future Marines from 2009 to 2012.

Christopher completed his service with Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, retiring from the Marine Corps in 2014 after 12 years of honorable service. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and earned numerous commendations, including:

  • Two Navy Achievement Medals
  • Two Certificates of Commendation
  • Four Good Conduct Medals

Continuing a Life of Service

Following his military career, Christopher returned to Appomattox, Virginia, where he began working as a computer technician for Appomattox County Public Schools. While making the transition to civilian life, he also served in several public service roles, including positions with Appomattox County Animal Control and the Lynchburg Police Department’s wildlife management division.

In 2018, Christopher joined the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. Today, he serves as a School Resource Officer at a Campbell County elementary school, a role he finds especially rewarding.

By building relationships with students, faculty, and families, Christopher continues to make a meaningful impact on the community he calls home.

Giving Back to the Community

Service remains a central part of Christopher’s life. Over the years, he has volunteered with the Appomattox County Rescue Squad as both a driver and EMT and served as a firefighter with the Appomattox County Fire Department.

Today, he is involved with ENDEX, a nonprofit organization that uses archery as a therapeutic outlet for military veterans and first responders. Through programs like these, Christopher continues to support those who have dedicated themselves to serving others.

Thank You, Christopher

From serving overseas in Iraq and aboard the USS Tarawa to protecting local schools and supporting fellow veterans, Christopher Cutlip exemplifies what it means to be a Hometown Hero.
