4 AC Maintenance Tips You Can Do
Nothing is worse than transitioning your system from heat over to AC and finding out your AC isn’t working properly. It’s common for repair companies to see an increase in AC repair calls once the warmer spring temperatures hit. Just like a vehicle, your home’s AC unit needs regular maintenance to keep it operating efficiently. Properly maintaining your air conditioner could save you the headache, sweat, and expense of an AC repair or replacement.
Change Air Filters Regularly
The most important maintenance task that will improve the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean the air filters. Experts recommend changing your filters every 3 months, but it might be necessary to replace your filters every month, especially during heavy use months in the winter and summer. Filters may also need to be checked more frequently if your air conditioner is subject to dusty conditions or you have pets in the house.
Remove Debris Around Exterior Unit
Over time, leaves, dirt and grass clippings will build up around the outside of your air conditioner unit, decreasing system capacity and reducing airflow. Rake any leaves and debris from around your unit and cut back any branches or plants to at least two feet from it to ensure good airflow and help prevent debris from collecting inside.
Clean Interior Unit
Clean the drain pan in the interior unit with soap, hot water and a touch of bleach. Pour a cup of half water, half bleach down the unit drain. Then, place a drain pan tablet in the pan to help prevent future algae growth inside your unit. If you notice the liquid does not drain easily, it may be due to a clog in the evaporator drain. This can lead to flooding or cause the system to stop cooling altogether. Locate the drain line, and use a wet/dry vacuum to clear the drain.
Clean the air conditioner’s coils
The air conditioner’s evaporator and condenser coils collect dirt over time which reduces airflow and insulates the coil, reducing its ability to absorb heat. Outdoor condenser coils can also become very dirty if the outdoor environment is dusty or if there is foliage nearby. Use compressed air to remove any accumulations. You may also use a soft brush to loosen any hard-to-remove material that has built up on the coil.
Home ownership comes with many advantages as well as many responsibilities. Just keep in mind that a little regular upkeep can go a long way to maintain a healthy AC system!
