3 Tips for Maintaining Your Attic

Nobody wants to climb up into the attic for any reason, much less to check and perform maintenance. While being the least visited area in a home, the attic still plays a vital role in keeping your home healthy and comfortable. To keep your attic in top shape, here are 3 basic tips you need to follow!

Check Insulation

Your attic most likely has some form of insulation already, but the question is if you have enough of it. Over time, insulation can get damaged by getting overly compressed or from receiving water stains. In addition to checking the condition of the insulation, also check to see that your attic is completely covered in insulation. Bare spots could be an indication that your attic doesn’t have enough insulation or that it is piling up somewhere. Before heading up to the attic, be sure that any electric charge has been disbanded before you start checking your insulation. Last but not least, protect yourself by wearing a face mask and gloves.

Patch Up Leaks and Cracks

Any type of opening or crack in an attic can cause problems. The best approach for discovering any openings is to check during the day, especially when it is very bright outside. Look for any streams of light coming through cracks and crevices, and take the time to fill the holes as necessary. Consider that cracks and openings can be signs of a bigger problem, such as foundation or structural issues, deterioration of load-bearing walls, or even decay of wood or other materials. Mold or other harsh allergens can develop and grow from leaks and cracks. If you are concerned about your findings, consult a home specialist or inspector to get an expert opinion.

Look for Pest Evidence

If pests, bugs, and other critters find their way into your attic, it’s important to know how to identify the problem early and get rid of them. Carpenter ants and termites are two major pests that can do a lot of damage in a brief period. Carpenter ants tunnel through wood to make a nest, while termites eat the wood. If you find that you are dealing with a termite or carpenter ant infestation, it’s best to call a professional as both pests can be difficult to treat. Small pests like mice can be handled with spring traps. Larger critters like bats or racoons will need to be handled by an expert.

Like any room in your home, proper attention and maintenance in your attic goes a long way in keeping your home healthy and stable.
